Really exciting to see all the new fixes and developments! The release of Cosmic is one of the most exciting things in store for me this year!

Just out of curiosity, why do you all think Lemmy is more positive?
I wonder if the slightly more difficult step of federating with an instance is keeping some of the more negative people away.
One common complaint I’ve seen with Reddit is the negativity. I’m really hoping that the freshness of Lemmy allows the opportunity for a more positive environment.
Maybe the slight difficulty of joining a Lemmy instance will keep more negative folks away, too.
Teachers. It is such a widely known trope that teachers are overworked and underpaid. So many that want to pursue teaching now enter the market, understanding that they will likely need a second job at some point. Although internet kudos do little to actually address the problem, my respect goes to the teachers.
Best wishes for a recovery. Thank you for being such a great human being to your cat.
It all depends on your risk tolerance and perceived threat model.
I would recommend that if you do use Proton Pass in conjunction with your email, keep a backup KeePass file stored locally and in a few other places and update routinely.
The Proton ecosystem definitely doesn’t fit everyone’s security model, but it is a massive leap compared to what Google and Apple offer.
In the entirety of my time using the internet, I have heard of the lack of freedom that Chinese citizens face regarding internet access. This has always been held up as indisputable evidence that the CCP is an authoritarian regime, and proof that if the CCP is willing to trample on some freedoms, it’s willing to trample on others.
Just as the U.S. Congress has (somewhat valid) concerns about a foreign entity holding so much sway over such a large platform, it could be stated that these objections are no different from what China claims. If it’s wrong for China to censor and ban platforms, its wrong for the U.S. to do so as well.
Is it concerning how much data is collected by Tik Tok? Yes. But without parroting what’s already been said, this bill comes nowhere close to addressing the key issues of data privacy that it claims to. Banning Tik Tok without addressing the egregious data collection of other platforms is nothing short of hypocracy.
Thank you for sharing these resources!
System76 has some good options. A little overpriced, but your money goes towards an open-source friendly company.
The only thing that keeps me tied to any Meta platform is the Facebook marketplace. It is the de facto method of buying and selling used goods in a sustainable fashion.
If there was any alternative, especially a federated one, I’d switch over in a heartbeat.
Props to you for getting a few to migrate over. Beyond the confusion that comes with federated media sign-up, Lemmy is definitely facing the chicken-or-egg problem. To get people to joi, it needs more substantial, diverse content. But to have that content, it needs a larger user base.
Have you seen many family members switch to Threads? Mine are sticking to the tried and true Facebook. I would have a Sisyphean battle to get them to switch to Threads, let alone Mastodon.
Positive: Government and corporate injustices are increasingly hard to sweep under the rug, and awareness of these injustices is more prevalent.
Negative: All this access to injustices going on can easily lead you down a spiral of hopelessness if you let it, especially when it seems like nothing is being done to fix the problem.
I use Linux for largely the same reasons I use Lemmy. While I’m still far from strictly using FOSS software, I respect the decentralization and freedom that comes with Linux. I have such a deep admiration and respect for everyday people that create/maintain platforms, as opposed to large companies that seeking to profit off their userbase.
While I have distro hopped a number of times over the past few years, I keep coming back to Pop!_OS. Everything just works right out of the box for me, but still gives me the freedom to tweak my environment however I choose. I love their tiling desktop feature and am anxiously awaiting the release of their new COSMIC desktop.
In the upcoming Cosmic desktop by Pop!_OS, workspaces can be monitor specific, just like MacOS
