Those round up things are a scam. The business collecting the money takes a huge tax break, even if they do pass it on to the charity. Just donate to the charity and take the tax break for yourself.

Being a middle manager (and therefore biased), I view my role as the person who serves the team by:

• being a firewall from upper management
• giving the team the things they need to do their jobs
• removing the things in their way

This allows them to do their jobs as best they can. Could they get by without me? Probably. But they would have a worse time and not be able to work as effectively.

Also, my rule of thumb is that 50% of invitees ever show, and of those only 50% will participate fully (i.e. not leave early, show up really late, have already eaten, etc.).
