I think Biden still believes that things can swing back in the midterms or next presidential election. I don’t think he realizes that this might have been the last election that was possible to win.

If he does something drastic, he’d probably hand even more popular support to the Republicans in general and to Trump in particular who would play victims as much as they could.

If he does nothing, it might be the end of democracy, not just in the US but in most of the world. But he will have “accepted defeat gracefully” and considering he won’t live to see the worst of it, I imagine that’s all that matters.

I would blame more of it on social conditioning than on genetics. Our instincts and urges provide a baseline to steer us in the direction that historically has been beneficial to for survival, but those are not what ultimately what decide our actions, nor are they always even beneficial.

One example comes to mind is men not talking about their feelings, not only does it exacerbate mental health issues and cause a great deal of personal anguish and even death, it also increases the likelihood of interpersonal violence which is bad for society at large.

I think the reason why people react the way they do is not because they are trolls but rather because it very much comes off as you making excuses for pedophilia, which is already a very sensitive subject to talk about.

To begin with, prepubescent girls can’t get pregnant. After that, young girls have an increased risk of not being able to carry a pregnancy to term, dying in childbirth, and of birthing children who end up underdeveloped.

I strongly disagree with this assessment when it comes to people who have not physically developed into adulthood yet.

Behavior is not generally without reason. Everything is because of reasons.

Sometimes those reasons are because something has gone wrong. Or because of random chance. To think every behavior fulfills an intended purpose that is evolutionarily beneficial is unscientific in my view.

Not only that but it makes it easier to care about one another, which gives a greater incentive to unionize.

The problem is that the previous accumulation of capital has centralized a lot of power in actors who have a financial incentive to stop renewables. If we could hit a big reset on everything then yes, I think renewables would win, but we’re dealing with a lot of very rich, very powerful people who really want us to keep being dependent on them.

I’m not sure that fawn feel much fear since they’re supposed to lie in one spot and wait for their mother, a quick search turned up “Very young fawns do not appear to have any natural fear of predators, and may even walk up to humans” although I haven’t been able to conclusively verify the claim.

The person who proposed it to begin with, Ylva Johansson is (to my great shame) a Swedish social democrat. Social democrats in Sweden unfortunately have their heads up their own asses a lot of the time.

I have a horrible feeling that this is the beginning of a terrible slide. The racists will use this opportunity to be as obstructionist as they can and then scream in their home countries about how inefficient the EU is, and because the EU is so far away from home for most people, they’ll believe them. And then we’ll slide further.

They were in the Eurovision this year (and unfortunately came last) but the Norwegian band Gåte. Their songs Skarvene and Hamløypar are two of my favorites, and Bannlyst is also fantastic.
