  • There’s a lot of gamers in this thread too young to remember how overloaded and miserable the free console game servers were.

Microsoft was like “chuck us like ~$5 per month and we will put up enough servers so the games are actually playable”. At the time, it was the best deal available for console gaming.

Honestly an argument could be made it was the most economical way to play online, in general, at the time. The console cost was subsidized, and the online servers were arguably at-cost, and you really only needed to buy one copy of Halo to join the fun.

  • If you’re interested in that level of control, it’s time to look hard at GrapheneOS. “Internet” is a permission you can grant or deny for each app, under GrapheneOS.

But I’m not aware of a way to selectively direct phone traffic through Proton VPN, at the phone. Even on GrapheneOS.

Enough skill with an expensive router could do it, but only on your home network, or only while routing all of your phone traffic back to your home network via yet another VPN.

Edit: TIL, Proton VPN supports split tunneling. Sweet! Look under Settings - Advanced - Split Tunneling - then pick your apps to include/exclude.

Edit 2: TIL DivestOS also supports “Internet” as a per app Permission. Very cool.

  • As a book and video game enthusiast, my unpopular opinion is that the average video game is a much better entertainment value than the average book.

I’ve played a lot of games and read a lot of books. When measuring dollars for hours, I think video games win.

On the one hand, I’ve put massive numbers of hours into titles like Zelda, Metroid, Harvest Moon, and Pokemon.

On the other hand, I’ve only gotten two or three read-throughs out of even some of my very favorite books.

And then the video game classics really put up some big numbers: after decades, I’m still enjoying PacMan, Frogger, and Galaga and their kin.

And then there’s the elephant in the room: Tetris.

If I had to pick - on a desert island - between an e-reader with every book ever printed, or one copy of Tetris on a Gameboy…it would be an agonizing choice.

  • It must have been traumatic for that Arch user to discover such rebellion in their child. /s

On a more serious note, if my kids find this post: I hope you know we can talk about closed source software if you’re curious about it - and about maintaining a proper virtual infrastructure to protect the rest of the network from it.

  • Dude whose job it is to rip off consumers says “consumers will lose”.

I’m sold. Pass that law. If the CC company bozos are against it, it’s probably a good thing.

This reads as “if our prices have to be competitive, we’re cancelling our bullshit programs where you could game back some of the money we took from you.”

Yeah. We know you won’t be able to afford that, because we will still have all of that money. That’s the point.

    Edit: “Let them eat cake.”
