hello all,

I’m re-starting write about matters that I like … however, I’m feeling lost about what to do - which type of blog I will create , etc.

I dont want to be paid - and I know nobody wants to pay for what I write ; I’m broke to self-host / or pay for a personal blog and I want at least get some views and get opinions about what I write. I dont want a super-duper-blog with millions views, but would like get some views - if one person in the world read which I write and like it, Im a happy guy.

And my questions starts here… I thinked about Substack, since that type of site is more popular than WriteFreely - Im privacy conscious and FOSS-Lover, and, at this point, dont know if enter to the mainstream sites get more people to see my content …

Dont have social media since 2019 and since then I only have accounts on big brothers if I really need…

dont know if Substack get help me to get more people for which I write or if creating a WriteFreely blog is the same as create a substack… Appreciate any type of suggestion or tip.

God bless you all.

I’m broke to self-host / or pay for a personal blog

There are free stuff like blogger.com (one of the oldest free way to start a blog, if you don’t mind it being owned by Google), it won’t look as shiny and trendy as other solutions, but it works. So is the free tier at wordpress.com (no self-hosting required, they manage everything for you). Both are 100% free but will only give you very limited options though, and will display ads.

Depending what you mean by being ‘broke’, you may also want to consider the annual cost of a cheap hosting + domain name (so you get full control on your blog). No ads and nobody to tell what I can and can’t do. Also, not saying it’s a necessity (it is not), but if you really want to encourage readers to participate, spending a little money in order to create a welcoming space maybe worth the cost.

I want at least get some views and get opinions about what I write.

Writing, no matter how good or genius you are, doesn’t grant you any ‘right’ to getting any view and/or opinion. You may or you may not get them, the only way to know is to… start and keep doing it up until it happens, or not.

That said, correct me if I’m wrong here, since you have not started writing it’s 100% sure you will not get any reaction. I mean, if you want a chance to get people to react to what you write, you first need to give them something to react to. Go on, start writing :)

Edit: you can always change your blog and make it better later on, when you see you enjoy doing it. But it wont ever happen if you don’t start ;)

The best advice I heard was once you start writing, don’t stop to edit yourself. Keep going until you’re done, THEN edit it.

If you edit as you go you will never finish.

Carry a journal around and write the ideas that come into your head. When you can, write them down fully, elaborately. Just write it all out of your head and worry about tidying it up for a blog after. The important thing is to write and let it all flow out until you’re done.

You can always start your own community on your Lemmy instance and start posting there until you figure out a different platform. You might even be able to buy a domain and forward it to your community, but I’d check with the instance admin to make sure you aren’t violating any rules.
